Samsung C&T_12th Samsung Village Project

Good Neighbors Bangladesh is operating its activities in 13 districts through 17 projects to achieve the SDG goals along with the government. To maintain the continuity, Good Neighbors Bangladesh is operating its activities through Samsung C&T_12th Samsung Village Project in total 4 schools under the secondary education thana of Pallabi and Badda which are- Islamia High School, Bauniabandh Ideal High School, Alhaz Abbas Uddin High School at Pallabi education Thana, Vatara Good Neighbors School at Badda education Thana.

The targeted total beneficiaries are 2233 students. The project activities under the name of “Strengthening child-friendly environment and quality education at Schools to improve the standard of life with basic human needs through SAMSUNG C&T_12th SAMSUNG Village project in Mirpur & Gulshan, Dhaka, Bangladesh.”

  1. Project Goal: To improve quality of life with basic human needs in targeted area.
  2. Objectives: Strengthening child friendly environment and quality education at Schools to improve the standard of life with basic human needs through SAMSUNG C&T_12th Samsung Village project in Mirpur & Gulshan, Dhaka, Bangladesh.
  3. Project working area: The working area of the Samsung C&T_12th Samsung Village Project in total 4 schools under the secondary education in Pallabi and Badda thana which are- Islamia High School, Bauniabandh Ideal High School, Alhaz Abbas Uddin High School at Pallabi education Thana, Vatara Good Neighbors School at Badda education Thana.
  4. Project Outcomes: There are four outcomes of the project as bellows-
  • Strengthened child friendly environment at school & improved quality education in targeted areas.
  • Access right to health and improved health status among targeted communities.
  • Developed knowledge and awareness on basic human needs.
  • Establishing child friendly environment school and strengthened awareness of environmental right.

5. Major activities: Here are main focusing 13 activities as per the PPF plan-

  • Upgrade facilities at schools,
  • Distribute education and teaching packages,
  • Installation of Solar power LED lightening street lamps,
  • Installation of waste management system and recycling program,
  • Installation of eco-friendly rest space and school garden,
  • Environment awareness creating campaign,
  • Organizing and operating of school green club,
  • Operating of Child Council Committee,
  • Conducting teacher’s seminar for creating child friendly environment at school,
  • Arrange standard health check-up campaign for all school children,
  • Provide reproductive care for adolescent girls at school,
  • Conduct health and hygienic awareness and distribute hygienic packages,
  • Parents education session and campaign to raise awareness regarding basic needs etc.

6. Major Achievements:

  • Created a beauty of sight and child friendly school environment at 4 targeted schools.
  • Modified and repaired of old facilities at class rooms to improve the educational environment by providing attractive and long-lasting school benches.
  • Created cheerful environment in the classrooms by completing the related and essential colorful art.
  • Developed multimedia class room for better learning by supporting laptops, multimedia projectors, projector.
  • Improved the classroom by providing chairs and tables for group work so that group projects could be carried out within the framework of the current curriculum.
  • Enhanced the school library by providing necessary and pertinent furnishings, such as tables, chairs, bookshelves, almirahs, and books for knowledge enrichment, to make each school library room aesthetically pleasing.
  • Improved the school scientific lab by adding elements such iron shelving, science lab tables, student seating benches, and other equipment and supplies to update and beautify the science labs of three partner schools.
  • Supported electric water filter for ensuring the pure drinking water facilities and upgraded the facilities of oldest washroom only at Vatara Good Neighbors School.
  • 1765 children in the targeted 4 partner schools were supported education packages by distribution of school bag-1 pcs, ball pen-12 pcs, notebook-7 pcs, umbrella-1 pcs, geomatics box-1 pcs, and scale-1 pcs.
  • Recovered the lack of proper and adequate educational materials due to the financial insecurity of parents.
  • Reduced the rate of regular absenteeism of children, increased the number of students and increased the public exam (SSC) pass rate in schools.
  • Ensured the 24 hours school premises security by the installation of Solar Powered Motion Sensor Outdoor Street Light at 4 schools.
  • Removed the darkness at night specially of main gate and school premises by supporting this LED street lamp at 4 partner schools.
  • Ensured every classroom (60 classrooms) was neat and clean by disposing of the class waste in each provided small dustbin and all students are used to remain the class room net and clean and good environment.
  • Maintained disposed classroom waste at the constructed concrete big dustbin for upholding the school’s environment cleanliness.
  • Six units of concrete umbrellas were constructed in 3 targeted partner schools to ensure the “child-friendly environment and rest spaces” in those schools for students to rest or entertain themselves under the constructed umbrellas in their free time.
  • Formed a committee named “School Green Club” in targeted 4 partner schools with selected 7 students among the students of classes six to ten. They are capable of guiding the other students to maintain the school’s environment green, neat, and clean and how to uphold the school’s green environment by avoiding the carbon footprint.
  • In total 1765 children were ensured their health checked up through the conducting of standard health checkup by an MBBS doctor so that the school authorities and their respective guardians were gotten a proper idea about the health status of their individual’s children.
  • A total of 598 adolescent girls received the sanitary napkin (confidence), which was a 15-piece pack in total, 6 packs each girl who were reading from class six to ten thus they ensured their menstrual health protection and also ensure their class attendance.
  • All the girls were understood menstrual health management through conducting MHM (menstrual health management) campaigns.
  • All the adolescent girls received MHM (menstrual health management) book and handout, published books on menstrual hygiene management. So that students (girls) have gotten a complete health education and guidance on the subject.
  • Received a total of 1765 children, soap-4 pcs (150 gm-savlon), hand wash-2 pcs (250ml-1pcs and 1000ml-1pcs), toothpaste-2 (250gm-colgate) pcs and toothbrushes-4 pcs (Colgate) so that all children ensured their health well by proper utilizing the supported hygienic packages.
  • A total of 85 government teachers received training through the teachers’ seminar, and they learned how to create a child-friendly school environment by fostering positive interactions between parents, teachers, and students.

  1. Md. Monowar Hossain, Director, Zonal Office, Secondary and Higher Education, Dhaka Zone, Dhaka was participated in the Hygienic kits’ distribution and school furniture handover Program at Islamia High School and visited all the activities by the Samsung C&T_12th Samsung Village Project and he appreciated a lot for implementing this activates rather than other NGO in that area. He also thanked to the Country Director of Good Neighbors Bangladesh and representative of Samsung C&T for the selection of Islamia High School and implement this all tremendous activates to develop its outstanding environment. He recommended to implement those tremendous activates in other school in future.
  2. Sabina Begum, Asst. Director-1, Planning and Development Wing, Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education, Dhaka- was participated in the Dignity Kits Distribution and Health awareness program at Islamia High School and Bauniabandh Ideal High School. She visited all the activities by the Samsung C&T_12th Samsung Village Project in the two partner schools and she appreciated of all kinds of implemented activities. She specially thanked to the Samsung C&T Project for supporting the uncommon and most necessary materials among the adolescent girls and also conducting awareness campaign on MHM by a female medical officer, which was really needed to the adolescent girls for ensuring their menstrual health protection. She seeks the successful and effective completion of the project.
  3. Mizanur Rahman, Asst. Director-1, Planning and Development Wing, Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education, Dhaka- was participated in the Hygienic kits’ distribution and school furniture handover Program at Islamia High School and visited all the implemented activities by the Samsung C&T_12th Samsung Village Project and he appreciated a lot for implementing this activates in that school. He recommended to the school authority for taking care of the implemented activities specially towards the colorful and delightful furniture to uphold the good school environment as well.
  4. Abdul Majid, District Education Officer, Dhaka was participated in maximum activities of the project like- Project Opening Ceremony, Hygienic kits’ distribution and school furniture handover Program and Educational packages and Hygienic kits distribution program at Islamia High School and visited all the activities by the Samsung C&T_12th Samsung Village Project and he appreciated a lot for implementing this activates rather than other NGO in that area. He also thanked to the Country Director of Good Neighbors Bangladesh and the representative of Samsung C&T for implementing those appreciable and needful activities in vulnerable school. He recommended to implement those tremendous activates in other school in future as like as the previous project.
  5. Farzana Sharmin, Thana Secondary Education Officer, Pallabi, Mirpur was participated in all activities. All the activities have completed successfully and effectively through her close supervision, guidance and suggestion. She visited and monitor all the implemented activates from the first to till completion with grate care and closely. She always appreciated to the Samsung C&T Project activates as well as the Good Neighbors Bangladesh overall activities. Which is really created a good impact in the targeted area as well as change the life of targeted all beneficiaries and shows the way how to shows the good change. She seeks the successful and effective completion of the project and future growth to develop our vulnerable community as well.

Lesson learnt:

1) Engaging the relevant government officials during the designing of the project, which will be helpful for getting the project’s additional approval from the authorities.

2) Continue the regular communication and maintain the strategic liaison with all stakeholders for successful completion of the project.

3) Through the implementation of innovative initiatives, it can be made a great change to create a child-friendly environment at schools, which is really needed, and also create a great impact in the community.

Challenges:

1) Obtaining the necessary additional government approval in a timely manner to carry out the project’s scheduled operations successfully and efficiently.

2) Ensuring the satisfactory expectations of the partner schools through the renovation work from the vendors.

3) Ensuring the proper and long-lasting use of the provided furniture, equipment, and materials.

4) Protecting the provided furniture, equipment, and materials from any kind of loss, damage, or theft.

5) Assistance from the partner schools for implementing the regular activities smoothly and effectively.

6) Local political barriers to implementing the planned activities.
