Project name: Building Resilience to Achieve Zero Hunger Project [BRAZHP]

Project Duration: 1 Sept 2018 to 31 Dec 2024 

Project Goal: Increase resilience and improve food security of people vulnerable to climate change.

Project Objective:
Contribute towards creating suitable resilience elements for the disaster-affected population by field- testing scalable innovative approaches and tools.

Main Activities:

       Forecast based Financing [FbF]-3,270 HHs (Jatarapur union-1,880, Begumganj union-1,390)

       Seasonal Livelihood Programme [SLP]-1,928 HHs Jatrapur & 316 Begumganj. Total: 2,244 HHs

       Project Grand Total Budget [$] 996,785

Project Activities:

       Forecast based Financing [FbF] anticipatory action for preparedness, response and risk reduction of an anticipated flood based on forecast.

       Seasonal Livelihood Program [SLP] tool for understanding relationship between seasonality and household economics. Alternative livelihood promotional support for the disaster vulnerable and facilitates prudent risk taking and increase savings.

       Climate Risk Insurance [CRI] risk transfer solutions for financial losses, access to savings to build risk reserves.

Activities of FbF

1.    Beneficiary selection, update their information including mobile account.

2.    Awareness training for the beneficiaries on disaster preparedness.

3.    Orient the UzDMC, UDMC and WDMC on the project activities and their roles and responsibilities.

4.    Volunteer group formation and train them on early warning message dissemination.

5.    Flood marker installation.

6.    Early warning message dissemination to the community people using different local medias.

7.    Mock drill on emergency preparedness.

8.    Mobile money transfer to the at-risk families (if flood trigger is activated)

Activities of SLP

1.    Data collection, Beneficiary selection, update their information including Bkash account.

2.    Training on online Bkash account transaction.

3.    Training on Entrepreneurship Development, IGA selection and Income Generation Activities.

4.    Cash support for IGA generation and Monthly subsistence allowance distribution.

5.    IGA establishment and regular follow up.

6.    Income analysis through Monthly profit calculation.

7.    Motivate the beneficiaries continue their IGAs..

8.    Motivate the beneficiaries involving innovative IGA.

 

Major Achievement:

1.     1447 beneficiaries Verify and validate the beneficiaries at the community level using the reference database from UNWFP at the beginning.

2.     Conducted mobile banking group sessions for 2,244 participants.

3.     Held an orientation on early warning systems for 3,270 participants.

4.     Completed district and upazila-level orientation/inception with 40 participants.

5.     Verified the WFP-provided beneficiary list for 2,588 participants.

6.     Managed SIM registration and organized SIM registration for 2,537 targeted beneficiaries.

7.     Opened bKash mobile bank accounts for 2,104 people.

8.     Provided early warning dissemination kits (life jackets, whistles, vests, caps, etc.) to 36 volunteers during disaster periods.

9.     Conducted community orientation/technical sessions on CRI for 1,000 participants.

10.  Provided disaster preparedness management training to 2,869 beneficiaries.

11.  Conducted disaster management and preparedness training in Begumganj, Jatrapur Union for 2,830 participants.

12.  Held refresher training on the roles and responsibilities of WDMC in Jatrapur Union for 252 participants.

13.  Held quarterly volunteer meetings with 72 participants.

14.  Provided training on post-harvest management for 280 participants.

15.  Conducted an awareness campaign on the nutritional value of mushrooms and cooking demonstrations for 1,969 participants.

16.  Formed and activated 20 self-help groups and 400 members.

17.  Demonstrated innovative agricultural techniques to 50 participants.

18.  Promoted group-based pumpkin vegetable production with 65 beneficiaries.

As a partner we have achieved in 2024 “Extremely Low Risk Partner” by Scouring 93%

Project Learning/Lesson Learnt

1.     Various disaster committees are now active & functioning

2.     Livelihood resilience of beneficiaries has increased

3.     Community level involvement of local youth has increased through volunteer meetings as well as disaster preparedness capacity of the volunteer also increased.

4.     The community people have been able to minimize damage by floods by watching flood Markers

5.     Linkage with Govt. Department. (Agriculture & Livestock)
