Not grammar, inadequate vocabulary is the root cause of weakness in English. In view of this pervasive vulnerability, Good Neighbors aims at making the primary school-going students in the area of Ghatail CDP, interested in English at an early stage, as well as inspiring them to enrich their English through the organized Interschool Word Competition in 2004. It two sections tests the student’s skills in two sections such as “Vocabulary Knowledge” and “Word Usage”.
Good Neighbors believes that no development is sustainable or effective, including social development without education and moral development. The Wordmaster competition is a part of the Good Neighbors education program. Yet there is an interest involved, that is: to remove the fear of English among the children of the country and to be a proud partner in the overall development of English education.
As the unit of speech is sound, so the important unit of language is the word. Knowing the word is only possible by learning its use. And learning the use of words also means learning the grammar. The first, natural and effective step in language learning is to learn words, not grammar. With this objective in mind, the competition has been named after Wordmaster.
In the Wordmaster competition, the students are able to solve the types of problems such as Parsing, Subject Verb Agreement, Identifying the Tense, Reasoning, Matching Columns, Contest writing, Fill in the blanks, and Rearrange the words to form meaningful sentences.
The students of class VIII have advanced language and comprehension skills, but prepare for higher grades requires more sophisticated vocabulary and language skills. Wordmaster aids in vocabulary growth, increasing students’ confidence in the English language, which positively impacts classroom discussions, presentations, and overall academic performance.

Since 2004, Good Neighbors Bangladesh has organized the Wordmaster competition, attracting students from 382 schools. Over three years, the competition has increased English pass rates, fostering interest in learning English. The success of this initiative suggests that implementing Wordmaster nationwide would also benefit the country.
Wordmaster does not follow any other syllabus or materials for the competition. Only the National Curriculum and Textbook Board follows the approved eighth grade syllabus and syllabus. English follows grammar and composition books as teaching materials.

The organization of school-based, upazila-based, district-based, and national level competitions is facilitated by special notices, preparations, communication with stakeholders, and the distribution of prizes to encourage meritorious competitors.
A standing committee of 5/7 members will conduct the WordMaster competition at school, upazila, district, and national levels. The committee will be chaired by the district/upazila education officer and consist of school teachers. Additional sub-committees may be formed for smoother competition conduct. Committee members will provide voluntary service for quality education.
The school’s English teachers will prepare the syllabus based on the Standing Committee’s decision. An honorarium will be provided for preparers and inspectors. The program maker will produce quality programs within a specified timeframe, ensuring accuracy in measurements. The answer key examiner will monitor and evaluate answer keys, maintain impartiality, prepare mark sheets, and hand over competition results to the Standing Committee in due time.
Students may be divided into small groups of equal number of members in the classroom for special preparation. Class teachers can prepare students through quizzes or simple tests depending on the type of competition. Competitions may be organized in the light of approved questions on specified dates.
Wordmaster will motivate students to participate in the competition by providing suggestions and regular updates on topics of interest. The goal is not only for students to excel in WordMaster but also to overcome English fear, improve communication skills, and achieve better exam results. The goal is to enhance students’ English language proficiency.
The headmaster plays a crucial role in organizing the Wordmaster Competition, creating opportunities and providing support for its successful execution. The school will monitor and provide necessary support to students who perform well in each stage, ensuring smooth participation.
The registration fee for school-based competitions is Tk 100, not the organization’s cost, but to foster responsibility among students. The fee is paid once before participating in Merit upazila, district, and national level competitions. GNB will provide necessary papers, prizes, and items, while upazila, district, and national level organizations will provide food, transportation fares, and other necessary items.
The competition winners at School-wise-3, Upazila-wise-5, District-wise-10, and Nationally-wise-15 will receive special prizes and certificates from the Deputy/District Education Officer/UNO. Nationally, first three contestants will participate in a national television talk show.
