Samia Khan Priya was a sponsored child of Good Neighbors Bangladesh’s Mirpur Family Development Project (FDP) from 2011 to 2019. Growing up in a financially disadvantaged family, continuing her education was a constant struggle. Limited household income also meant few opportunities to develop new skills, build confidence, or participate in activities beyond the
classroom.
Through Good Neighbors Bangladesh’s child sponsorship program, Samia received far more than educational and health support. She actively participated in child club activities, life skills education, leadership training, and child rights awareness programs. Encouraged to express her ideas,
work collaboratively, and engage in community initiatives, she gradually transformed from a shy child into a confident young leader. Her leadership earned her the role of President of the Good Neighbors Bangladesh National Child Council. The knowledge and skills she gained opened new opportunities.
After completing the sponsorship program, Samia volunteered with UN Volunteers (UNV), Islamic Relief Bangladesh, and Plan International Bangladesh, promoting child and youth leadership. She
also presented the findings of a nationwide survey on gender-based violence prevention at a national youth event. Today, she is pursuing an MSc in Environmental Sustainability and Green Technology at Keele University, United Kingdom.
Reflecting on her journey, Samia says, “Good Neighbors Bangladesh helped me believe in myself. It gave me the confidence, knowledge, and leadership skills that continue to guide my life.
Samia’s journey demonstrates that child sponsorship goes beyond financial assistance it empowers children to realize their potential, become leaders, and create lasting positive change in their communities and beyond. Currently, Good Neighbors Bangladesh is helping shape the dreams of
more than 20,000 sponsored children through its child sponsorship program.
সামিয়া খান প্রিয়া ২০১১ থেকে ২০১৯ সাল পর্যন্ত গুড নেইবারস বাংলাদেশের মিরপুর ফ্যামিলি ডেভেলপমেন্ট প্রজেক্ট (FDP)-এর একজন স্পন্সরড শিশু ছিলেন। আর্থিকভাবে অসচ্ছল পরিবারে বেড়ে ওঠায় তাঁর শিক্ষাজীবন চালিয়ে যাওয়া ছিল এক কঠিন সংগ্রাম। পরিবারের সীমিত আয়ের কারণে নতুন দক্ষতা অর্জন, আত্মবিশ্বাস গড়ে তোলা কিংবা শ্রেণিকক্ষের বাইরের কার্যক্রমে অংশগ্রহণের সুযোগও ছিল খুবই সীমিত।
গুড নেইবারস বাংলাদেশের চাইল্ড স্পন্সরশিপ প্রোগ্রাম সামিয়াকে শুধু শিক্ষা ও স্বাস্থ্য সহায়তাই দেয়নি; বরং শিশুক্লাবের কার্যক্রম, জীবনদক্ষতা শিক্ষা, নেতৃত্ব উন্নয়ন এবং শিশু অধিকারবিষয়ক বিভিন্ন কর্মসূচিতে অংশগ্রহণের সুযোগ করে দেয়। নিজের মতামত
প্রকাশ, দলগতভাবে কাজ করা এবং কমিউনিটির বিভিন্ন উদ্যোগে যুক্ত হওয়ার মাধ্যমে তিনি ধীরে ধীরে লাজুক এক শিশু থেকে আত্মবিশ্বাসী তরুণ নেত্রী হিসেবে গড়ে ওঠেন। তাঁর নেতৃত্বগুণের স্বীকৃতিস্বরূপ তিনি গুড নেইবারস বাংলাদেশ ন্যাশনাল চাইল্ড কাউন্সিলের সভাপতি নির্বাচিত হন।
গুড নেইবারস বাংলাদেশের মাধ্যমে অর্জিত জ্ঞান ও দক্ষতা তাঁর জন্য নতুন সম্ভাবনার দ্বার উন্মোচন করে। স্পন্সরশিপ প্রোগ্রাম
শেষ হওয়ার পর তিনি UN Volunteers (UNV), ইসলামিক রিলিফ বাংলাদেশ এবং প্ল্যান ইন্টারন্যাশনাল বাংলাদেশ–এর সঙ্গে স্বেচ্ছাসেবক হিসেবে কাজ করেন এবং শিশু ও যুব নেতৃত্ব বিকাশে ভূমিকা রাখেন। এছাড়া, তিনি লিঙ্গভিত্তিক সহিংসতা প্রতিরোধ বিষয়ে একটি জাতীয় জরিপের ফলাফল জাতীয় পর্যায়ের যুব সম্মেলনে উপস্থাপন করেন। বর্তমানে তিনি যুক্তরাজ্যের Keele University-এ Environmental Sustainability and Green Technology বিষয়ে এমএসসি
অধ্যয়ন করছেন।
নিজের এই যাত্রার কথা স্মরণ করে সামিয়া বলেন, “গুড নেইবারস বাংলাদেশ আমাকে নিজের ওপর বিশ্বাস করতে শিখিয়েছে। এই প্রতিষ্ঠান আমাকে আত্মবিশ্বাস, জ্ঞান এবং নেতৃত্বের যে দক্ষতা দিয়েছে, তা আজও আমার জীবনের পথচলায় অনুপ্রেরণা জোগায়।
সামিয়ার এই অনুপ্রেরণামূলক যাত্রা প্রমাণ করে যে, চাইল্ড স্পন্সরশিপ কেবল আর্থিক সহায়তা নয়; এটি শিশুদের সুপ্ত সম্ভাবনা বিকাশে, নেতৃত্বের গুণাবলি অর্জনে এবং সমাজে ইতিবাচক পরিবর্তনের অগ্রদূত হিসেবে গড়ে উঠতে সহায়তা করে। বর্তমানে গুড নেইবারস বাংলাদেশ তার চাইল্ড স্পন্সরশিপ প্রোগ্রামের মাধ্যমে ২০,০০০–এরও বেশি স্পন্সরড শিশুর স্বপ্ন গড়ে তুলতে নিরলসভাবে কাজ করছে।
