Northern Bangladesh, particularly Jatrapur Union of Kurigram, is highly vulnerable to the adverse impacts of climate change. Strengthening the capacity of local communities, conserving the environment, and implementing climate-resilient initiatives are essential for addressing river erosion, floods, droughts, and cold waves while ensuring sustainable development.

To address these challenges, the Kurigram Nature and Peace Club, supported by Good Neighbors Bangladesh, took initiative in mobilizing youth as agents of change and empowering them to take ownership of their environment.

Awareness campaigns on hygiene, sanitation, and environmental conservation, along with tree plantation, sapling distribution, community clean-up drives in schools and markets, and the “One Tree in Exchange for 10 Plastic Bags” campaign, increased public participation in environmental protection. At the same time, public awareness was raised against river pollution and deforestation.

The project has significantly increased public awareness, positive environmental practices, and community participation in environmental conservation. Through tree plantation, clean-up campaigns, and active youth leadership, environmental pollution has been reduced, green coverage has expanded, and the foundation for a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable community has been strengthened.

This initiative has demonstrated that empowering and mobilizing young people can transform environmental challenges into opportunities for community development.

Before joining the Nature and Peace Club, I never realized that my small actions could have such a significant impact on the environment. Now, I regularly plant trees, participate in community clean-up campaigns, and work to keep my community clean and green.
