Born and raised in Konagaon village, Kamalganj Upazila, Moulvibazar District, she grew up in a family that valued service and community. Her education ended in 2000 when she was married in the tenth grade — a reality many girls in Bangladesh face.
The early years of marriage were marked by hardship. With her husband unemployed and only a small piece of agricultural land to support the family, she worked tirelessly to provide a better future for her children. Yet, the challenges she faced would later become the foundation of her leadership.
A turning point came in 2012 when she joined Good Neighbors Bangladesh. Inspired by her own experiences, she became a passionate advocate for child rights, girls’ education, and women’s empowerment. She helped establish and lead women’s cooperatives, supporting more than 1,480 women through savings and small loan initiatives and helping many achieve financial independence for the first time.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, she coordinated emergency food and healthcare support for over 1,200 vulnerable families, making sure no one in her community was left behind.
“Every girl who remains in school is a reminder of the education I was unable to complete,” she says.
Her work has brought wide recognition. In 2022, she received the Upazila-level “Joyeeta Award” for contributions to women’s empowerment and the “Sahasika Award” from Good Neighbors Bangladesh. That same year, she was elected Member of Adampur Union Parishad and now serves as Panel Chairman, representing about 13,000 residents.
“Good Neighbors Bangladesh gave me the confidence to lead, the courage to speak, and the opportunity to serve my community,” she says.
Today, she continues championing financial inclusion, preventing child marriage, and strengthening community resilience across Adampur Union — proof that empowering one woman can transform thousands of lives.
গুলনাহার বেগম: শিশুবিবাহের শিকার থেকে কমিউনিটি পরিবর্তনের কারিগর
মৌলভীবাজার জেলার কমলগঞ্জ উপজেলার কোনাগাঁও গ্রামে জন্ম ও বেড়ে ওঠা তাঁর। সেবা আর মানুষের পাশে দাঁড়ানোর মূল্যবোধে গড়া এক পরিবারে তাঁর শৈশব কেটেছে। ২০০০ সালে দশম শ্রেণিতে পড়াকালীন বিয়ে হয়ে যাওয়ায় সেখানেই থেমে যায় তাঁর পড়াশোনা বাংলাদেশের অসংখ্য মেয়ের জীবনের এক চেনা বাস্তবতা।
সংসার জীবনের শুরুটা ছিল কঠিন সংগ্রামের। স্বামী বেকার, সম্বল বলতে সামান্য একখণ্ড চাষের জমি। সন্তানদের জন্য একটু ভালো ভবিষ্যৎ গড়ার আশায় তিনি অক্লান্ত পরিশ্রম করে গেছেন। সেই দিনের কষ্টগুলোই একদিন হয়ে উঠবে তাঁর নেতৃত্বের ভিত্তি।
২০১২ সালে গুড নেইবারস বাংলাদেশে যোগ দেওয়াই ছিল তাঁর জীবনের এক বাঁকবদল। নিজের জীবনের অভিজ্ঞতা থেকে অনুপ্রাণিত হয়ে তিনি হয়ে ওঠেন শিশু অধিকার, কন্যাশিশুর শিক্ষা ও নারীর ক্ষমতায়নের এক নিবেদিতপ্রাণ কণ্ঠস্বর। তাঁর হাত ধরে গড়ে ওঠে নারী সমবায়, যার মাধ্যমে ১,৪৮০ জনেরও বেশি নারী সঞ্চয় ও ক্ষুদ্রঋণের সুযোগ পেয়ে জীবনে প্রথমবারের মতো অর্থনৈতিক স্বাধীনতার স্বাদ পান।
কোভিড-১৯ মহামারির কঠিন সময়ে তিনি ১,২০০-রও বেশি অসহায় পরিবারের জন্য জরুরি খাদ্য ও স্বাস্থ্যসেবা পৌঁছে দেওয়ার কাজ সমন্বয় করেন — নিশ্চিত করেন, তাঁর এলাকার কেউ যেন পিছিয়ে না পড়ে।
তিনি বলেন, “স্কুলে টিকে থাকা প্রতিটি মেয়ে যেন আমার অসমাপ্ত শিক্ষার এক জীবন্ত স্মারক।”
তাঁর নিরলস কাজ পেয়েছে ব্যাপক স্বীকৃতি। ২০২২ সালে নারীর ক্ষমতায়নে অবদানের জন্য তিনি পান উপজেলা পর্যায়ের সরকারি “জয়িতা সম্মাননা” এবং গুড নেইবারস বাংলাদেশ থেকে “সাহসিকা পুরস্কার”। একই বছর তিনি নির্বাচিত হন আদমপুর ইউনিয়ন পরিষদের সদস্য হিসেবে, বর্তমানে যেখানে তিনি প্যানেল চেয়ারম্যান হিসেবে প্রায় ১৩,০০০ বাসিন্দার প্রতিনিধিত্ব করছেন।
তিনি বলেন, “গুড নেইবারস বাংলাদেশ আমাকে দিয়েছে নেতৃত্বের আত্মবিশ্বাস, কথা বলার সাহস, আর নিজের সমাজের সেবা করার সুযোগ।”
আজও তিনি আর্থিক অন্তর্ভুক্তি, শিশুবিবাহ প্রতিরোধ এবং কমিউনিটির সহনশীলতা বৃদ্ধিতে আদমপুর ইউনিয়ন জুড়ে নিরলস কাজ করে যাচ্ছেন। একদিন যিনি শিশুবিবাহের কারণে স্কুল ছাড়তে বাধ্য হয়েছিলেন, আজ তিনিই গড়ে দিচ্ছেন আগামী প্রজন্মের জন্য নতুন সম্ভাবনার পথ। তাঁর জীবন প্রমাণ করে, একজন নারীকে ক্ষমতায়িত করলে তা হাজারো জীবনে বদল আনতে পারে, প্রজন্মের পর প্রজন্মকে দেয় অনুপ্রেরণা।
